What changes
What a photo can reveal, and what this tool removes.
Removed
- GPS location and altitude
- Date and time the photo was taken
- Camera, lens and serial number
- Owner, artist and editing software
- Maker notes and embedded previews
- XMP, IPTC, comments and text fields
- Content Credentials (C2PA)
- Data appended after the image, such as motion-photo video
Kept (JPEG, PNG, WebP)
- The image data, unchanged
- The colour profile, so colours don’t shift. It can include descriptive text, such as the profile or device maker’s name.
- The orientation flag, so photos stay upright
Other formats are converted to JPEG: transparency becomes white, animations keep their first frame, and colours and compression can change slightly.
Not covered
- Anything visible in the picture: faces, signs, screens
- The file name; rename it if it says too much
- Videos and RAW files
- Metadata types the tool doesn’t recognise
Want to inspect every field first? The metadata extractor lists them all (it uploads the photo to our server to read it).
No. The photos are read and cleaned by JavaScript in this page, on your device. They are not sent to Simple Photo Gallery or anyone else. We only record an anonymous usage event with the number of files, their formats and whether location data was found.
Not for JPEG, PNG and WebP: the tool removes the metadata blocks and copies the image data unchanged. Other formats, such as HEIC, are converted to JPEG. Converting turns transparent areas white, keeps only the first frame of an animation, and can slightly change colours and compression.
Yes. For JPEG, PNG and WebP the tool keeps the orientation flag, so phone photos don’t turn sideways. It is a single number with no personal information.
It removes EXIF data (including GPS location, capture date, camera model, serial number, maker notes and embedded previews), XMP and IPTC data, comments, text fields, Content Credentials and data stored after the image, such as motion-photo video. It keeps the colour profile so colours look the same; a colour profile can contain descriptive text such as the profile or device maker’s name.
No. The clean copy is checked again for the metadata types listed above, but a file can carry information in other ways. Anything visible in the picture, such as faces, house numbers, signs or screens, stays. The file name can also say something about you; rename it if needed.
In browsers that can open HEIC, such as Safari, the photo is converted to a JPEG. Other browsers can’t open HEIC files; export the photo as JPEG first.
Up to 10 photos and 100 MB in the list, 25 MB per photo and 40 megapixels per image, so the page doesn’t run out of memory. Photos are processed one at a time.
